A formula column is just a column; its source is a function which returns something (or nothing). You can normally display it on the screen.

A function is ... well, a function. A piece of code that also returns something (or nothing). You can call it from a formula column, from report triggers, but you can't display it "as is" (but, as I said, it must be a source for something else, such as a formula column).
