>my envs are all fine,
The error message would indicate otherwise.
is the current OSUSER in the same group as the "oracle" user?

You contend everything is fine or as it should be but offer NO proof this is the case.
OBVIOUSLY something is NOT fine, you have not provided any evidence one way or the other.

You should be able to obtain a clue or two if you have root access by using truss.

Hi,
Check your sqlnet.ora file.
(sqlnet.authentication_services = ?)
above value should be NTS if NONE then change to NTS.

regards
Taj

Hi I did run a truss no issues there, i compared with other servers where I dont have the problem ... i had the unix admin also to takea look we cant find anything, we beleive that could be underneath for permissions at o/s level, we dont manage the o/s for the server and im trying to request an umount of the file system and see if all permissions are given to oracle ...

>Hi I did run a truss no issues there
Exactly what "issues" were you looking for?
truss should have shown what was being or attempted being accessed just before the ORA-01031 occurs.
You could have an error of omission (some thing is not there) as opposed to error of commission ( doing something wrong).
Your problem might have something to with orapwSID & initSID.ora parameter.

Hi

I cant create the datbase, I get the ora-01031 as soon as the sqlplus '/as sysdba' is issued, i believe that could be permissions underneath, i have asked to the unix team to umount and check permissions and they were wrong, now they tell me that they are fine, i'm not able to check them, so i dont really know for sure

was root.sh by root at the end of the installtion process?
Note:233223.1
You're On Your Own (YOYO)
P.S.
Are you really, really sure that the output from truss did not contain any clues to the underlying source of your problem?

yes everything is in place, i have a call open with oracle and the issue seems like permissions at O/S level, i may reisntall the software again perhaps in a different location

The issue was veritas volume manager preventing oracle to execute under /opt/product which was where oracle was installed, as soon as oracle was installed in a diferent mount point the issue was gone. although oracle had full permissions, but the interesting part is that I have oracle installed in the same directory path in other servers and no issues.
Thanks
