We are using Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 running on a SunFire 280R running SunOS 5.8

The database in question has a very large amount of data contained on 4 external 75GB drives. In order to save space, each table is partitioned according to date, with partitions being grouped into separate tablespaces. This was done with the idea of periodically erasing the oldest partitions and dropping the tablespaces to recoup the disk space for newer data.

However, a HUGE problem has arisen. After dropping the tablespaces and deleting the datafiles, the disk space is not being freed up! We now have 4 drives near capacity, however, if you look at the files on the drives, they should only be half full. Oracle is keeping all of the space that the old datafiles occupied. We have shutdown the database and rebooted the server, and this problem persists. Very soon, the database will become inaccessible if we cannot get this space back.

Has anyone else experienced this? How do we get the OS to recognise this free space again?

Thanks for your help!

When I am confronted with a post of contradictory details such as this post, I always believe the OS or Oracle are a more reliable presenter of facts that the human.

In other words, if you had really done as presented above, then the disk space would have been returned to/by the OS.

Therefore, both Oracle & the OS know the file space is still in use.

Please provide CUT & PASTE of interaction with OS that demonstrates the reality supports your assertions.

Yikes... you are correct. Embarassed There was an old installation of 8.1.7 still sitting on one of the drives and occupying the space.

which makes me wonder if the tablespace you dropped was not that big to begin with ...
